Investigators say they believe the suspects in an arson that destroyed a newly built $1.1-million home in Aylmer are from the Greater Toronto Area, and police are renewing their call for the public’s help tracking them down.
Emergency crews were called to a fire at the home on Aspen Parkway in Aylmer at about 2:30 a.m. on March 24, Aylmer police said. Construction of the house was complete, but residents had not yet moved in, police said.
Damage was estimated at $1.1 million.
The suspects fled the scene in a vehicle last seen heading eastbound on Dingle Street just after 2:30 a.m., police said. The vehicle’s make and model are unknown.
Officers collected evidence at the scene, including discarded clothing close to the burning house, police said. It is believed one of the suspects involved suffered serious burns.
An investigation by Aylmer police, along with the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office and the Ontario Provincial Police forensic identification unit, determined the fire started with a “large amount of gasoline” that exploded, police said.
Police believe the suspects are from the Greater Toronto Area.
Investigators urge anyone with information about the arson or suspects to call them at 519-765-3144 or Crime Stoppers 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
The blaze was not related to a fire that struck the Elgin County community’s downtown core days prior, police have said.
