Authorities are investigating Wednesday after the physique of a porpoise was found on a seaside close to Victoria.
The invention at Esquimalt Lagoon in Colwood, B.C., was first reported to the Division of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) as a beached killer whale. However fisheries officers on scene decided it was truly the physique of a Dall's porpoise, a species generally discovered off the West Coast.
"We do not see them a complete lot on this space, particularly inshore right here," mentioned Willi Jansen, an officer with the DFO's whale safety unit out of Victoria.
Whereas the animal appeared to have some lacerations on its physique, the DFO says it is too early to find out the reason for loss of life.
The porpoise was loaded right into a DFO truck Wednesday afternoon with the assistance of some beachgoers, and shall be transported to a provincial lab within the Vancouver space.
"It is going to return into our freezer after which be taken over to the Decrease Mainland to the vet there to do a full necropsy to determine the way it died," mentioned Jansen.
She estimated the animal weighed roughly 300 to 400 kilos.
"It was too huge even for the physique bag that we had so we put it on a stretcher and carried it up with the assistance of the general public, which was a lot appreciated," Jansen informed CTV Information.
The DFO asks the general public to report related discoveries to its fisheries hotline at 1-800-465-4336.
