Using birthdates to chose lottery numbers proved lucky for an Oakville man who won more than $3.8 million.
John Sirman may be singing happy birthday to me for some time after winning in the June 15 LOTTO 6/49 draw.
The 72-year-old retired father of two says this is his biggest win ever.
“My winning numbers were a combination of my wife and children’s birthdates,” Sirman said, adding he plans to share his good fortune with his children.
Sirman isn’t the only one to recently win using birthdates for their lottery numbers.
Edna Woodrow, of Barrie, Jacinta King-Fernandes, of Bradford, and Penny Daley, also of Bradford, won $100,000 in the June 8 LOTTO 6/49 draw using birthdates.
The trio, who all work in the healthcare profession, have been friends for 20 years and have been playing the lottery together for a decade.
“I was at home when I checked our ticket using the OLG App and thought we won $100,” Woodrow said. “When I texted a screenshot of the photo to the girls, I took a closer look and noticed the comma and all the zeroes.”
King-Fernandes said the group stopped their group text to share the news with others.
“I feel like I already spent this money before we got it. I couldn’t sleep, so I was up all night spending it in my mind,” King-Fernandes said.
Daley said she can pay off the new car she just bought.
“I wasn’t entirely comfortable purchasing my car – so in that moment, I knew it was paid for,” Daley said.
Woodrow plans to pay down her mortgage and King-Fernandes will invest some of her winnings and pay some bills.
They plan to continue to play the lottery together.
