Man, 59, charged after Muskoka Lakes marina damaged by excavator

Bracebridge OPP have charged a 59-year-old man from Muskoka Lakes after a local marina was badly damaged on July 21.

And the shocking incident was caught on video then posted on Twitter.

The accused stands charged with mischief over $5,000 and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Bracebridge at a later date.

OPP say officers arrived on the scene just after after 9 p.m. and discovered “significant damage” to the marina on Lake Rosseau in Muskoka Lakes Township.

Video posted to Twitter shows a person on an excavator plowing through a building at the Pride of Rosseau Marina, with the suggestion it was “a disgruntled fired employee.”

Gosia Puzio with the Central Region OPP says police won’t be releasing the accused’s name or if there’s a workplace connection.

“We would never release anyone’s employment record,” said Puzio. “In this case, it’s not relevant.”

Another marina operator in the area, Geordie Newlands, owner of SWS Muskoka, told Postmedia’s Courtney Greenberg more than one building had been damaged and estimated possible repair costs was “in the millions.”

“Luckily nobody got hurt, which is a good thing,” he said. “It was almost surreal what happened. For something like that to happen… it’s like fiction.”

He wasn’t willing to speculate on the reason for the incident but said economic times have been tough and added: “It’s a small community up here and it’s pretty devastating.”
