Toddler dies in hot car after gunman kills dad, steals car, then abandons it

A Houston father and son are dead after a carjacker shot the dad, stole his vehicle and abandoned it with the little one inside to die in the heat.

Bolanle Fadairo, 38, has been charged with the murders of Michael Essien and his two-year-old son, Micah, as well as tampering with evidence, KTRK reported.

Fadairo reportedly got into an argument with Essien before he was shot dead in front of his son.

The accused allegedly fled with the victim’s son still in the backseat, then abandoned the vehicle with the child inside.

Officers found the car five hours after Essien was shot dead with its doors locked and windows rolled up as temperatures in the city reached 32C, according to the arrest affidavit obtained by the outlet.

Fadairo allegedly tried to destroy some text messages between himself and Essien prior to his arrest, the report stated, with officers confirming the two men had arranged to meet.

The reason for the meeting is unknown.

“Michael never argued with anybody,” Essien’s sister Jessie told the outlet.

“Michael would take his shirt off and give to others,” she said. “He gives his last dime to other people.”

Essien’s wife reported her husband and son missing around 6:40 p.m. on Tuesday, hours after he was allegedly shot multiple times by Fadairo.

Investigators believe the child died from heat exhaustion but an autopsy will confirm the cause of death.

Essien and his wife have two other children – a five-year-old son and a daughter who was born just last week.

“A mother lost her husband, and she lost her two-year-old child,” Houston Police Executive Assistant Chief Larry Satterwhite told reporters.

“We never knew about the child until she called,” he continued. “Sadly, it was too late. The child had passed in the car.”
