Toronto Police investigate two overnight carjackings

Two carjackings overnight Friday into Saturday are being investigated by Toronto Police.

One of the incidents happened near the area of Morningside Ave. and Staines Rd.

Police say the call came in as an attempted carjacking.

Officers who raced to the scene took one person into custody and also recovered a firearm.

A second suspect was still being sought by investigators as of Saturday afternoon.

There were no injuries, according to police, and the targeted vehicle was recovered.

The second carjacking happened close to Bayview Ave. and Sheppard Ave. E.

In that incident, a vehicle was stolen.

Police say two suspects were involved and that a firearm was seen during the course of the alleged crime.

No suspect description has been released so far.

No one was injured during the incident which police continue to investigate.

Anyone with information is asked to call 416-808-2222.

The latest police figures show vehicle theft on the rise in 2022.

There have been 5,905 such incidents since the beginning of the year.

That is an increase of almost 46% over 2021.

For months, police across the GTA have been warning drivers about vehicle thefts taking place while people are asleep in their homes, or when vehicles are idling in front of homes.

Police have linked some of those thefts to organized rings targeting specific vehicles.

During the course of the year, the police chief and the head of the holdup squad have advised the public to give up their vehicles and not resist if they find themselves confronted by carjackers.
