Hitmen add veteran scoring depth by getting forward Jacob Wright from Silvertips

The Calgary Hitmen were in the market for another 20-year-old player.

They were also in search of more scoring.

So Friday’s trade for Jacob Wright from the Everett Silvertips comes as no surprise in their ambition to make some noise in the Western Hockey League this season.

“We had an open 20-year-old spot, and it was our goal to acquire a top-six forward who can provide more offence.” said Hitmen GM Jeff Chynoweth. “Jacob will be a valuable addition to our team, both on and off the ice.”

To get Wright, the Hitmen dealt 19-year-old forward for Steel Quiring, a sixth-round pick in the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft, and a third-round pick in the 2024 WHL Prospects Draft.

Wright was listed by the Silvertips in March 2018 and has played the last three seasons with the club.

The 5-foot-10, 171-lb. native of Langley, B.C., has played in 131 WHL contests, scoring 34 goals and 77 points. Last season, he sniped 22 goals and counted 47 points in 68 games.

Meanwhile, the 6-foot-2 Quiring has 14 goals in 30 points in 89 WHL games, split between the Hitmen and the Kelowna Rockets.

“We wish Steel all the best in his new opportunity with Everett,” said Chynoweth

The Hitmen (1-0-0-1) return to action Sunday in the third regular-season game of the 2022-23 campaign. They host top NHL draft prospect Connor Bedard and the Regina Pats (2-1) at Scotiabank Saddledome (2 p.m.).
