Peel cops continue efforts to ERASE street racing

Peel Regional Police say illegal street racing and aggressive high-speed driving are still a plague on roads.

So they set up Project ERASE — Eliminating Racing Activities on Streets Everywhere — to end dangerous driving, as well as the Project Noisemaker program, which targets vehicles with modified and/or excessively loud exhaust systems.

From May 1, 2022 to Oct. 1, 2022, police identified hotspot areas throughout the region and targeted those places.

During this time, police investigated 2,191 vehicles and issued 1,440 provincial offence notices, including 556 stunt driving charges, 132 improper/no muffler charges, and 14 Criminal Code charges related to impaired and dangerous driving.

“We remind the public that street racing is illegal and that it endangers the safety of everyone on the road. To ensure safety on our roads, Peel Regional Police will have zero tolerance for dangerous driving behaviours and street racing activities. Our officers remain vigilant twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week,” police said in a release.

“Peel Regional Police is committed to road safety as a core policing function. Speeding, aggressive driving, and impaired enforcement are a top priority for our officers and Service.”

Anyone with information on aggressive driving or illegal street racing are asked to contact police by calling 905-453-3311, or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
