Thousands raised for Hamilton siblings killed in ATV accident

A GoFundMe page has been established for the two children tragically killed in a Thanksgiving weekend ATV accident in Hamilton.

Mia (Emilia) Friere, 8, and Noah Freire, 6, were killed on Saturday when they were riding in a side-by-side ATV driven by their 35-year-old father.

The ATV ended up submerged in a nine-metre-deep pond located on the property in a field just west of Miles Rd. in southeastern Hamilton.

Their father was able to get out of the water and call for help. Emergency personnel, including the Hamilton police marine unit, along with a Peel Regional Police dive team, began a desperate search for the children.

The three were taken to a Hamilton hospital, but the children died.

The GoFundMe page was put up Sunday and has so far raised $58,000 of its $75,000 goal.

“Mia [Emilia] and Noah Freire were involved in an off-road ATV accident which claimed both of their young, beautiful lives,” the GoFundMe page states. “They have left us, and their family devastated. An unimaginable void has been left in the Freire family that is unfathomable. Dave and Ashley, we cannot begin to express how sorry we are.”

The post added: “In this difficult time while the family is grieving, we look for your generosity to assist with funeral costs, and donations to ensure the family is taken care of while they mourn. We ask only for what you can spare, and appreciate any and all help, big and small.

“The Freire family will never be the same, two beautiful babies were taken far too soon, and we hope to aid in any way that we can for the difficult times ahead.”

Police continue to investigate and have ruled out alcohol as a contributing factor. The children’s deaths are considered Hamilton’s 19th and 20th traffic fatalities of the year.
