City evaluates pilot Yonge St. project with bikes lanes, restaurant patios

Travel time for motorists along a stretch of redesigned Yonge St. increased even though there were generally fewer vehicles on the road.

However, the number of cyclists and pedestrians using the stretch between Bloor St. and Davisville Ave. rose significantly between May 2021 and August, according to data released by the City of Toronto Friday on the ActiveTO Midtown Complete Street Pilot.

The pilot project installed bike lanes, curb extensions, planters and on-street restaurant patios.

Toronto Fire Services emergency response through the area increased by 48 seconds and ambulances took an extra 113 seconds to travel the route compared to 2019.

However, fire and ambulance response times are up across the city over that time period.

“Community consultation has taken place before and during the pilot, with local businesses, four Business Improvements Areas, several neighbourhood associations and area residents,” a city statement says. “Community feedback will be considered before making a recommendation to City Council on whether the pilot should be made permanent.
