Five family members are lucky to have escaped an early morning Boxing Day fire in Pickering.
Pickering Fire said crews responded to a house blaze on Liverpool Rd., just south of Hwy. 401, after they received a fire call at 3:11 a.m.
A Pickering fire official said the family living in the residence made it out safely, although some had to be transported to hospital to be treated and released for smoke inhalation.
By 11:30 a.m., all that remained at the scene was a Durham Regional Police officer and a ServiceMaster technician.
Dolf Bramaeur, who identified himself as the owner of the house, said his tenants are safe and that’s all that matters.
“We got a call early in the morning, and apparently we don’t know what the cause of it is right now,” said Bramaeur. “No injuries, that is the main thing.”
Bramaeur said he was “very upset,” especially since the blaze happened a day after Christmas when everybody is supposed to be enjoying themselves.

Bramaeur said he has owned the house since 1981 and nothing like this has ever happened before.
“I’m very conscientious about the house. I have five smoke detectors in there. I did everything I could have done to prevent anything like that.”
The front exterior of the single-storey home was burned out. Icicles hung off green Christmas tinsel wrapped around the front railing, leading up to the scorched porch.
A man Bramaeur identified as one of his tenants said he was “still in shock” and didn’t want to speak about the fire since it was now under investigation.
