Sports briefs: Huskies women's track and field team capture U Sports bronze

Results from sports teams this weekend including Huskies track and field, Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League and Saskatoon wrestlers.

Following three days of competition, the University of Saskatchewan women’s team claimed third place at the U Sports track and field championships held at the Saskatoon Field House.

Silver medals were awarded to the women’s 4 x 200m relay team, which featured Kendra Farmer, Paige Willems, Rachel Albertson, and Grace Igbiki finishing with a time of one minute and 38.13 secs, as well as the 4 x 400m relay (3:43.73) which saw Farmer and Willems team up with Avery Pearson and Sarah Schwab.

Individually, Farmer added a silver in the 300m race (38.28) as well as a bronze in the 600m (1:29.02), while Pearson captured second in the 600m (1:28.83). Other women medallists included a silver for Jennifer Weber in shot put (13.75 metres) and a bronze for Jenna McFadyen in the 3,000m (9:39.37).

The women’s team finished with 65 points, only one point behind the second placed Western University Mustangs.

On the men’s side, the U of S team claimed a single medal, but it was golden for Michael Akintunde, who won the men’s long jump with a distance of 7.62 metres.

Overall, the men’s team finished in 11th place with 21 points.

For the fifth straight time, the University of Guelph Gryphons finished in the top spot on both sides of the competition as the women’s team earned 166 points and the men 123.


Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League playoffs set

While there’s still a few games left in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s regular season to play over the next few days, the best-of-seven quarterfinal matchups have been determined.

The top-seeded Battleford North Stars — who finished the regular season with 99 points over 56 games — will take on the No. 8 Weyburn Red Wings, the No. 2 Humboldt Broncos will face the No. 7 Nipawin Hawks, the No. 3 Flin Flon Bombers will face off against the No. 6. Estevan Bruins, and the No. 4 Melfort Mustangs will battle against the No. 5 La Ronge Ice Wolves.

The post-season will being on March 17.


Three golds for Saskatoon wrestlers at nationals

A number of Saskatoon wrestlers attended the Canadian senior, junior and cadet wrestling championships in Waterloo, Ont. over the weekend, with three competitors bringing home gold.

Cole Sanderson won by tech falls over both of his opponents to claim the top spot in the senior men’s greco roman 72 kg class, while Caitlin Clatney defeated her opponents by fall in all three of her matches to take gold in the junior women’s 59 kg division, and Myah Phillips won her first round by decision and followed it up with tech fall victories in the other three rounds to win the junior women’s 76kg division.
