Right whale spotted in Canadian waters for the first time in 2022

HALIFAX -

A North Atlantic proper whale has been noticed in Canadian waters for the primary time this yr.

The Division of Fisheries and Oceans says one whale was noticed by surveillance plane within the Gulf of St. Lawrence, north of Les Iles-de-la-Madeleine, Que., on Tuesday.

The sighting has triggered a 15-day fishing closure in particular fishing grids within the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence.

There are roughly 336 North Atlantic proper whales in existence.

Fifteen calves had been noticed earlier this yr in waters off the US.

Many proper whales spend their summers feeding within the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

This report by The Canadian Press was first revealed Might 4, 2022.
