TPH issues alert following suspected opioid-related deaths

Toronto Public Health has issued a warning following the deaths of 10 people last week from drug overdoes.

On July 22, TPH posted on social media that the deaths were from suspected opioid overdoses between July 17-21.

In July, Toronto paramedics have reported 21 drug overdoses.

“Paramedics attended 21 suspected overdose calls in July, including 10 deaths from July 17 to 21. Please try not to use drugs alone. Use a consumption site, have someone check on you,” they posted.

TPH says the the spike may be attributed to an increase in the number of people smoking the drugs.

There were a range of drugs involved in this month’s spike.

“Toronto’s Drug Checking Service has recently found higher amounts of fentanyl in fentanyl substances and potential evidence of crack cocaine being contaminated with fentanyl. A sample submitted as used crack cocaine equipment was found to contain cocaine, fentanyl, and caffeine,” TPH said.

Toronto Paramedic Services reports drug inhalation equipment, such as pipes, were found near the overdose deaths.
